A Year in the Life of a School Counselor:
The Month of January

 Learn what happens in the life of a school counselor during the month of January. Follow me throughout the year as I give an inside glimpse of the exciting world of school counseling!

Wow, getting back in the swing of things has been tough for January. We have so many R.T.I. conferences scheduled and have had a few snow days thrown it.

This really sets us back due to all the rescheduling and doubling up on the meeting days.  We are also having some 504 meetings as well.

I am behind in my guidance as well. I have had a few guidance cancellations due to the snow days and other issues. I am doing back to back guidance lessons and may have to inch into February to make sure every classroom has a guidance lesson. 

This month our character word of the month is “charity”. I have created the warm fuzzy named “Snowflake” to represent this word. I wrote a story about “Snowflake and the Winter Wind” to teach my students about “charity”.

The lessons this month are centered on the word “charity” and each grade level is getting a different lesson from the same story.

We are also hosting, “No Name Calling Week” and attaching the word “charity” to this celebration. The students are learning that charity means giving on all levels.

We need to be kinder to one another and stop bullying. Another attachment for “No Name Calling Week” is to have a school wide behavior incentive.

I have created a “Snowflake Lottery” for students who are being kind to one another and showing “charity” to the teacher by behaving, doing class work, etc. Students will get a ticket and a winner from each grade level will be pulled this week.

Our school is holding a contest on “Bullying Prevention Coping Skills” that encourages students to come up with their own unique bullying prevention coping skill.

I will be reading these on the announcements and we will have a boy winner and a girl winner. The girl winner will get a “Snowflake Warm Fuzzy Necklace”, and the boy winner will get a “Snowflake Trophy”. 

My students go gaga over the Warm Fuzzy Feelings and love the monthly theme in which a new “Warm Fuzzy Feeling” is introduced.
