Let me ask the question to you again... Are you healthy? Mentally? Physically? Spiritually?
Do you exercise regularly? Do you eat a healthy diet based heavily on plants? Are you overweight? Do you seek supervision / therapy / guidance when you need to? Do you do drugs or drink too much? How's your stress level? Do you do nice things for yourself often?
These are some tough questions, but important to note. Believe it or not, we are role models to our clients and others who see us in our professional roles.
When I was just starting graduate school I thought mental health professionals were supposed to be perfect. My professors helped me realize that this was far from the truth. I remember one of them saying how he got very with an employee at the mall while shopping one day.
Therapist are real people, and sometimes we are "too real". I always tried to let my students in graduate school know that I had my own problems, but I did not bring them to work.
I used to say, "Pack two briefcases, one with all your problems, the other with your case notes and work files. Now, leave the briefcase with your problems at home and take the other one to work with you."
However, there are some things we just can't pack away in a briefcase such as being overweight, stressed out, lack of self-care, hangover, etc.
If we are trying to guide others to be healthier we have to be a proper role model, right?!
I want to share some important information with you below that have made me much healthier and happier.
When I start to feel stressed out, exhausted, angry, cranky, (All the negative emotions) I go to my philosopher, physicists, metaphysics, therapist, spiritual healer Tom Campbell. When I listen to Tom I hear all a combination of all the great therapists since Freud, Adler, Jung, Rogers, Yalom, Ellis, etc.
