What? I have to build my own Sand Tray Therapy Bridge for Sand Tray Therapy Class? A Therapist's Reflection on the Sand Tray Therapy Bridge Assignment

My first approach to building a sand tray therapy bridge seemed to imply that the goal was to make as much out of as little as possible, to construct a stable bridge out of only toothpicks.

Then, as with most personal journeys, I realized my perspective was far too narrow, neglecting the many other resources available to me. Toothpicks were used, but they weren't the only material available.

Below are a series of bridges. Though my first is not included here, I feel that each subsequent sand tray therapy bridge grew sturdier and made better use of my available resources. We have the rather unstable bridge made of toothpicks and foam blocks. Though there is a railing for added reliability, the bridge appears fragile and to be used with caution. Then there is the bridge of straws, stabilized by pipe cleaners.

This bridge appears sturdier and offers the traveler multiple directions though it seems a bit slippery as is. And finally, there is the bridge that's colorful, creative, and pleasant to approach and cross. This bridge offers multiple views and grows life within it. This is the bridge used for the creation of this tray.

As I constructed a world around this sand tray therapy bridge, one that inevitably evoked my inner psyche and unconscious self, I found myself selecting miniatures that represented me with those very significant, influential individuals in my life. These were primarily present relationships though some represent former persons and relationships. The significance of most of these is welcome, accepting, at home in the tray though distress had to be recognized in some areas.

Because of this unresolved tension, it was essential to include the rainbow, a symbol of reconciliation and hope, as well as some greenery to acknowledge the life and potential growth that have and continue to occur as this journey continues.

Finally, though I am partial to the final bridge created and used for tray construction, I realized in the process that all bridges, regardless of stability or appearance, are likely to be crossed at some point as our journey would be incomplete without them.
