Travel Mandala for Play Therapy

The concept of the mandala is new to me for play therapy class. I have seen representations of mandalas everywhere but did not know the true significance or therapeutic benefits.

It was interesting to discover how such a simple activity can result in both artistic beauty and deeper awareness of oneself and others.

I was excited to learn about mandalas and found myself telling my friends and relatives about the concept.

After examining the list of creative ideas, the travel mandala jumped out at me and I decided to depict one of my most memorable vacations with friends.

I drew and then colored my mandala with a pencil and markers. As I began the process, the image took on a life of its own. I drew a beach scene with boats, plants and trees, the sun, and hills in the background.

I have taken numerous vacations since Jamaica, but I realized that this memory was so profound because it symbolized the demise of a valuable friendship.

I asked myself why after 5 years was this even a thought? Perhaps I truly missed by friend, but even more, I yearned for the good times that we shared on vacation.

By the end of the mandala experience I was ready to plan a girls getaway and reclaim some of that fun, adventurous spirit that seemed to have died so many years ago.

This exercise demonstrated the strength of the mandala in bringing forth suppressed feelings and thoughts. I was completely relaxed and felt a sense of peace and calm as a completed the activity.

I have rediscovered my interest in art and look forward to learning more about mandalas as well as creating additional ones.
