Transitional Objective (Non-directive) Sand Tray Therapy Activity
This sand tray therapy activity in class caught me off guard. I felt filled with emotion. I used a mermaid to represent myself. She is lovely but yet unraveled. I think she may be my constant miniature. She brings the reality my confrontation of facing another health issue. I have encountered 3 surgeries in 3 years. Just when I thought I was healed and feeling great, and would not have to face another cumbersome related medical issue, it rears its ugly head again. I feel worn out, disappointed, and above all frustrated. I am realizing how fragile our bodies our and how careful we need to take care of them.
I like to believe that my faith is strong and I can gain strength through God. Hence, my large cross in the corner of my tray. There is a door in front of the cross. That is the gateway of waiting to hear from God. My yellow flowers make me smile all the way down the path to God’s presence. I understand that he is on his own time. I have prayed for healing with each medical procedure. I have been healed through doctors every time. I still hoped the issues could have been rectified through a miracle. I saw a miracle with my son nine years ago, therefore, I know they are real and very possible.
I put 2 angel -like figures nearer to myself. They are helping me to keep the faith and give me hope and encouragement. Directly next to me is a seal that represents my surgeon. I am honored by his extensive knowledge, grateful to be able to have the opportunity to be a candidate for surgery with his staff, but still wish I did not ever need him again.
In the other far corner I have a beach chair, red shoes, rocks and an umbrella. This is my other inspiration. I love the beach and it makes me think of serenity and peace. I put a “Zen” rock next to the chair in hopes of finding myself there.
The last object in my sand tray therapy activity is a large shell to the right of the mermaid. At first I was unsure what it meant. I think it may be my solid ground that I know I am following. Because I am only human, I think I can become fixated on the easier route when something difficult passes my way. Certainly a miracle is painless and quicker than another surgery. I felt happy to get unresolved emotions out into the open and focus on plan of action for my future. I have learned all things shall pass.
