Play Therapy Sand Tray: Therapist Need to Learn How To Do This for Clients!
I'm finding the play therapy / sand tray therapy to be much more complex than I originally thought. I was impressed as we did the mini-session sand tray therapy in class last week that there really is a way that the mind conceptualizes the Sandtray Therapy tool as it should be completed. I've seen many kids enter playroom for play therapy and the first thing they do is go for the sand. I had always watched them and tracked them and looked for obvious patterns and metaphors. I believe that after experiencing the Sandtray myself, I have gained a far greater appreciation for the subtleties involved in the process.
To prepare for this sand tray therapy homework assignment, I filled my Sandtray and put it in my office. What struck me most about the assignment was not really the assignment itself, but it was my children’s reaction to having the Sandtray in the house.
My eleven and seven year old immediately began to play with it. Even more amazing is the fact that they both played without argument for almost seven hours straight.
The seven year old in particular has been actively playing for days. With all the toys, all the opportunities to play outside, and all the technology, he has spent the last few days playing in the Sandtray. I find it amazing that is has this kind of effect on him.
For my own Sandtray, I chose to limit myself to ten miniatures. I was originally concerned that I would simply recreate the same one I did last week in class. In fact, I did choose some of the same miniatures. However, I found myself creating something completely different.
After arranging the sand tray therapy miniatures in the way I thought they should be, I attempted to interpret the placement. I feel the sand tray represents the way I felt that day. I felt I was being pulled in multiple directions, surrounded by different tasks and responsibilities. It seemed that they are circling around.
If I could change this scene, I would identify which animals identified real problems, and then which ones could be removed from the circle. It is my belief that this is the way I feel about my problems, but in reality there are less.
All therapist need to be trained in the sand tray therapy. It is a must to help all ages of clients.
