Student 5: House, Tree, Person in the Sand Tray for Sand Tray Therapy Class
When Dr. S initially gave this assignment for sand tray therapy class and explained the meaning behind it, it made me reconsider how I would design my tray in the sand. Although I had limited materials, I tried to construct a house that gave an impression of safety. Ironically, the water in my drawing was exactly how I would have pictured it to be if I had heard the symbolism of the water before. In my tray, the water is depicted by a creek, or stream that appears to be never ending. This is because my love for my mother is never ending. We have an incomparable bond. The trees represent my relationships with other people. I must say that over the years I've done some pruning, but I also have started to plant a few more trees because I do have some new friendships that are thriving. The sun represented the relationship with father. In my drawing, my sun was a corner sun with rays beaming from it. In my sand tray, I only had one sun in my collection that I could use, but I made sure to depict that my sun was partially buried in the sand because my relationship with my father is not strong. It is actually very weak and I wish I had a much smaller sun to place inside of the tray. This tray helped me to become more attuned to understanding my relationships with others, especially my family members.
