School Counselor Month to Month Schedule: September
By now my guidance schedule is in full force. I do guidance lessons once a month for teachers kindergarten through fifth grade. I am very lucky to get to do it only once per month. Many counselors have been put on the rotation schedule. I could not imagine doing all I do and teaching on the specials rotation schedule.
I have chosen the word(s) of the month to be “Goal Setting” for the entire school. I have named a “Warm Fuzzy Feeling” pom pom ball “Wish”. In guidance I read “The Story of Wish” which teaches kids how ot turn wishes into goals. Wish has become a very popular warm fuzzy of the month! I have made posters of this little warm fuzzy ball and given them to teachers during guidance lessons. My students are really loving the warm fuzzy named “Wish”.
Each grade level will hear “The Story of Wish”, but I will have a different lesson planned for each grade level. For counselor guidance in kindergarten the students will draw a picture of themselves working hard at school.
For first grade they will draw a picture and write a sentence. Third grade will play a bingo game. Fourth will play a game I designed with stepping stones that lead to the Land of Warm Fuzzies. For my 5th grade guidance the students will write a list of goals and a plan of action on how to get there.
This month I am hosting a “Mentor Welcome Back Breakfast” for the people who mentor at our school. I am also on the Mentor Board, so we have a meeting this month as well. It is important to thank the mentors who come to your school to help students. I also give an end of year party to thank them for the year. We have some new mentors this year and it is important to meet them face to face, as they can be a bit nervous about coming to a new school.
I am also going to a 504 / Legal Updates Meeting. As a school counselor who handles 504 plans it is extreamly important to know the legalities of the 504 plans. I handle all the 504 plans at my school. Based on the new laws we expect the number of 504’s to grow.
If you want to be a good school counselor you really need to understand and know educational law. Nowadays it seems you need to have a law degree on top of everything else. I am attending these trainings to make sure I know the legalities of the 504 plans. We have attornies that hold these meetings and listen to new cases and updates.
This month we will celebrate “Anti-Bullying Week” during the week of September 16th – 20th. As the school counselor you get to pick the actual week you want to celebrate something like “Anti-Bullying Week”.
Base this on how many meetings and guidance lessons you have during the week. I go on the announcements to talk about each day’s activites. Parents, teachers, and administrators expect this type of celebration throughout the year to bring students into bullying prevention awareness.
I have tied the Warm Fuzzy pom pom balls to this week’s activities. We are trying to promote how our school is a warm and fuzzy place for students. My students are so excited about meeting "Wish" the new warm fuzzy! I am able to teach them how to turn wishes into goals with the little warm fuzzy "Wish".
I have finally found the school counselor dream school and dream guidance schedule. Stay tune for next month. We will introduce a new "Warm Fuzzy and a new Word of the Month" .
