Sand Tray Therapy Project Tray to Use in Sand Tray Therapy
When sand tray from sand tray therapy was demonstrated in class, I was shocked to see how powerful sand tray therapy can be for a client. I saw how clients can use objects to express things that they are not ready to verbalize. The transparency that occurred in the demonstration done in class happened so quickly. I have clients that I have worked with that it has taken several months to touch the surface of their deep rooted issues.
When I did my sand tray in class, I had representatives of my family members, but nothing for myself; it took another student pointing that out for me to realize what I did. In that moment I realized how much I time I spend focused on others to the point that I forget about myself. Ironically, that week was quite stressful for me at work which included a tremendous amount of changes and decision-making in a short amount of time.
In the sand tray I did I home, I decide to add things that make me happy and that I enjoy. The first things I selected were 3 jacks that represent my children in their favorite colors and then I selected 2 jacks that represented my husband and me. I then added a ball to represent sports, a sun, star, a flower, and a fish. I added dinosaurs to represent education and nature. I enjoy learning in general and learning about nature. The frogs and fish represent the beach and being outdoors; two things that represent serenity for me. Lastly I added a red car. Red is my favorite color and the car reminds me of the vacation I went on with my husband; it was the best vacation we have ever had alone.
This sand tray for sand tray therapy helped me to remember me. The nature of my work, education, and life roles cause me to focus on others the majority of the time. This assignment helped me to remember to take time to focus on self-care for my health, balance, and my efficacy in as a counselor.
