My experience with sand tray therapy had to grow on me; originally I did not like it.
The miniatures in class that I had to choose from really were not my choices that I would have used or selected to put a picture in the sand.
I felt as if I just grabbed and picked up what was left. When we practiced in class with our sand trays, I did find myself able to tell a story in the sand with what I selected.
In my experience of sand tray therapy after playing with it a bit, I soon discovered that any miniature can tell the story or create a scene, because you get to select which miniature represents whatever you want it to represent.
As I worked in the sand, originally I found myself trying to figure out what to put in the sand, but eventually it became very easy, and I found myself engaged and enjoying the scene I was creating as an important theme of my life.
Sand tray seemed at first as if it would only be for children to me, but not until I was engaged into creating a scene did I feel the power of using a sand tray in such a short time frame to become so deeply engaged.
It seems to be a very quick way to engage and process issues. I like the fact that the tray evoked emotions and things that are significant to me by bringing it to the surface.
My thought about sand tray is that it seems to be a powerful counseling tool, and just from this short time of engaging in it, it really does seem like a therapist needs to be well educated in working with something that can bring about deep emotions so quickly.
I must say that I was a skeptic to sand tray, but now I believe that it can be a wonderful tool to use.
My tray reminded me of why I am the way I am. Not until I completed my tray scene was I able to process the scene and identify an important truth.
