Sand Tray Therapy Activity for Therapist, School Counselors, Psychologists, and Social Workers to Use

I went into building my first sand traytherapy activity by randomly selecting a variety of sand tray therapy miniatures that I felt I was drawn to. I found myself first making an area of water surrounded by greenery and flowers. After doing this I immediately began to think of a calm relaxing area. I then selected miniatures and placed them randomly throughout my sand tray world. Once I finished I found myself reflecting on my sand tray wondering what each miniature represented. I immediately began thinking of my family. The area with water surrounded by flowers and a heart made me think of my great-grandmother that recently passed away. The area reminded me of a calm place that you go to rest and relax. I experienced both a warm and unexplainable feeling while making this. Next I realized that I had a miniature to represent the people in my life that I feel are most important and that I am closest to. I then realized that my miniatures had been grouped together in clusters just as the are in real life, by the area of the United States in which they live. After realizing this my first thought was WOW. I couldn’t believe that I had placed them together in my sand tray world just as they are in relation to me in the real world.
Prior to building my first sand tray I built a bridge out of toothpicks. In my sand tray I placed the bridge in between the two clusters of miniatures. I feel that in my sand tray world the bridge was used to represent the closeness between the family of the sand tray world although they are far apart. With the bridge they can always get to one another. Lastly I had to sit and think of which miniature represented myself and why. I choose the Elmo miniature, which was placed in the center. This represented the playful and youthful me that I have lost touch with. Building my first sand tray for sand tray therapy class was an interesting experience and I can’t wait to see what my next sand tray brings.
