Play Therapy Puppet Show Idea and Example
My inspiration for the play therapy puppet show was from observing a boy scout troop eating lunch at a local diner. The boys appeared to be approximately 10 years old and all were texting/playing games on their iPhones.
Later that same day, my 5 year old niece showed me her new Kindle that she just received from her grandparents. The influx of technology at such an early age worries me. I chose to write a script about educating elementary aged children on cyberbullying.
Writing the play therapy script was fun but challenging. I had to be sure to keep the language simple and fun. I added two props in the script to ensure engagement as I only had two characters in the script.
My play therapy puppet theatre is made using a cardboard box. I wanted to create an “world wide web” experience so I covered the cardboard in aluminum foil and created a mouse pad on the right, a keyboard in the middle and a printer on the left side showcasing the safety pledge for internet use. I kept my characters simple by having one villain and one hero.
I made my play therapy puppets using popsicle sticks, cardboard, and construction paper. I used glitter and pipe cleaners to add decor. The total cost was approximately $10.
I enjoyed the project as I think storytelling is not only a great way to engage children in play therapy, but also a great way to engage adults. If I had an opportunity to do it over again, I would have made my theatre a bit smaller and eliminated the top part of the play therapy theatre. Simple is definitely better.
