Play Therapy Family Genogram: My Play Therapy Experience

I created an extended play therapy family genogram that included my sisters, my older sister’s family, and my family. I found the most therapeutic part of making this the picking out of the miniatures to represent the people. I found myself thinking most of the week about the best way to represent my family. I wanted something to be so obvious about their personality.
Finally I was limited by the trivial amount of the play therapy miniatures in my possession. I picked the best ones that I had to represent the family. I picked a cute little gray dog for my little sister because she was a caring person that like a dog would make you feel better. I picked a dragon for my older sister because she can be useful and loving/protective of her family, but she is also a mean person. I picked Wish Bear for me to represent my optimistic, playful, caring personality. My parents are represented by kissing bears who cannot be taken apart. I see them as loving people not only to each other, but also to their family.

My husband is Mater from Cars because he is good-natured and loves working on cars. Our sons are Alvin and Theodore from The Chipmunks because they are good boys. My brother-in-law is a spider. I don’t like him. Can’t you tell? He is a spider because he is mean and hurtful to people. My nephews are Wishbone from The Adventures of Wishbone and Donatello from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. These are two very different characters and they are very different boys. One is more good-natured and the other is more aggressive.
I think it is important to look at the play therapy genogram, but also to listen to the person making it because miniatures can mean different things to different people. My play therapy genogram makes sense to me, but it may say something different to someone else.
