Play Therapy Family Genogram Example:
My play therapy family genogram consists of me, my parents and my younger sister. Dr. Stangline insisted that we start with our biological parents. I grew up with my mother and step-father. I’ve only met my biological father once. I didn’t see the need to include him, since he has not been a part of my life. However, it was helpful for me to start off with him in the genogram. The process helped me to resolve some feelings that I didn’t know I had. Just because a person hasn’t been involved in your life doesn’t mean you don’t have feelings and opinions about them. My attitude toward him changed from anger to pity. After processing those thoughts, I placed him on a shelf and put my real father in his “rightful place.”
I am the eldest of two daughters. I am five years older than my sister. The genogram shows my sister closer to our mother, because they have a close relationship. Both of them are the youngest in their family of origin and they are similar in many ways. It used to bother me that they were so close, but now I rarely think of it.
In the play therapy genogram I am shown closer to my step-father, which sometimes surprises me because he isn’t my biological father. However, the person I was most close to was my maternal grandmother. I lived with my grandparents the first two years of my life and we bonded emotionally. The relationship with my mother has taken much work, but over the years we have grown closer. It will be interesting to experience how my family will interact in the play therapy dollhouse.
