(Play Therapy Student for Play Therapy Class)
The Play Therapy Dollhouse session was amazing. Witnessing the therapy session at the start of the class was very powerful; I really understood the depth involved when using the dollhouse with a client. The dollhouse allows a therapist to get a deep understanding of the client's foundational issues from childhood, some of which they may have not come to terms with or still need closure on.
As the client, the play therapy dollhouse brought up core issues when I began constructing it. I suddenly remembered the absence of furniture for one of my siblings, although she is younger than me and was living in the house at the time. It made me understand further about her perspective of her childhood growing up as well as her relationship with my parents.
As the counselor, I was initially nervous about engaging the client and asking "good" questions. However, there is a wealth of information to gain with the dollhouse, and there exists a plethora of questions to be asked of the client regarding their childhood and family. In many cases, the client may feel compelled to elaborate on their story or to explain things to the counselor in fuller detail. I found that my nervousness went away because I was so engaged with the client and her story, which was good. I think the dollhouse is an incredible tool for use in counseling, regardless of the client's age.
