Play Therapy Bibliotherapy: "You Are Special"

I selected, “You are Special” by Max Lucado as a play therapy bibliotherapy book to present. Though the author’s stories are constructed on Christian principles, the book can be used on all cultures and religious backgrounds. This play therapy book sparked my interest because my niece, Camilla, is experiences some issues in her classroom. She is in first grade and is the only African American student in her class. She has begun to notice that her hair is different from the other girls and is not happy that she has to wear braids versus being able to wear her hair loose like the other girls. This book is ideal for handling such sensitive topics with a young child. The play therapy book is about a little boy, Punchinello, who lives in a town where there is a pressure to receive a gold star as it was believe that gold stars were better than gray stars. Unfortunately Punchinello only received gray stars and was extremely upset about it. He went to see a carpenter who was nearby. The carpenter explained to Punchinello that the color of the star doesn’t matter. He stated that the stickers on stay attached if you believed that gray stickers aren’t a good thing. After leaving the carpenter, Punchinello realized that his stickers no longer stuck.
Camilla loved the book. I correlated the stickers to her hair. I got a blank stare at first and then placed a sticker on her head and asked her does it matter. I asked her some follow up questions for her to realized that her hair is beautiful no matter how it is styled it.
This book is a keeper in my toolkit!
