This play therapy book is about the value of friendship. Sometimes children want to isolate themselves, so they don’t have to interact with others. The main character (Bear) wants to be left alone. He doesn’t realize or has forgotten how important friends are. The therapist can use this story speculate with the child different reasons why Bear may not think he needs a friend (Mouse).
Why do you think Bear wants to be alone?
a. Maybe Bear had a friend who hurt his feelings and decided he doesn’t want to feel like that again.
b. Maybe Bear doesn’t know what to say to a friend and he’s afraid he might say the wrong thing.
c. Maybe Bear doesn’t like how he’s dressed and thinks a friend may laugh at him.
Bear is convinced that he wants to be alone. But Mouse is determined that he wants to be Bear’s friend and he persists. Mouse’s persistence pays off and he finally gets to spend a little time with Bear. Bear slowly realizes that he likes having someone to talk to and laugh at his jokes. Then he realizes he wants Mouse to become his friend.
Also, the story reminds play therapists that people (children) often want to reach out to others, but they don’t know how. The story has humor, sad moments and a happy ending. This is a great Play Therapy Book for Bibleotherapy.
