The play therapy bibliotherapy book that I chose for bibliotherapy is Amelia Bedelia by Petty Parish. Over the years I have collected several children’s books and I have become quite fond of the Amelia Bedelia collection. There are several books available each loaded with wacky illustrations and lots of humor. This book is a great read for every age group, particularly students on the elementary level.

In this play therapy bibliotherapy book Amelia Bedelia accepts a job a housekeeper and is given a list of tasks to perform while her employers are away. Amelia completes every task as she understands it but they are all completely wrong. When the homeowners return they are horrified by what they see. For example they asked Amelia to take out the lights when she is finished and she literally unscrews the light bulbs and hangs them outside on the clothing line.

In the end, although Amelia made so many mistakes, she did one thing right and that one thing outshines all of the mistakes that she made.

What I enjoyed most about this book is that it demonstrates how important it is to give clear and concise directions when communicating with others, not just children. Although some of the scenarios are quite a stretch of the imagination, one can’t help but laugh at Amelia Bedelia’s literal-mindedness.

This book, along with any of the other books in the Amelia Bedelia series is ideal to use for play therapy bibliotherapy because it uses humor, colorful illustrations and attention grabbers to engage children. Most importantly it shows children that everyone makes mistakes and it is not the end of the world.
