Play Therapy Miniature World Activity to use on Adults and Children
My play therapy activity: miniature world for this assignment was "personal landscape", which to me was very confusing at first. I understood using points of interest from a map legend, however, I could not tie it into how to use with a client for therapy purposes. Finally, after searching more on Dr. Stanglines' website, I realized what she meant.
For this play therapy activity miniature world I used a pizza box, construction paper, rocks, sticks, and various items to represent outdoor landscaping (for example the upside down coffee filter was a mountain). For my miniatures, I chose different types of vehicles, representing my variety of feelings for this session. On one side of the pizza box, I drew a highway & placed a couple of newer sleek looking matchbox race cars; this is when things are "falling into place" and I feel like I'm cruising through my day.
The tanker truck in the corner beside the rock represents when I feel like I am constantly filling everyone else's love tank, by meeting their needs, helping them, etc.... The monster truck posed to climb over the rocks & up the mountain, is how I feel when I a struggling with a tough situation, and have to work hard for every step of progress. The crashed white care beside the river & big rock represents when I've tried and failed at something.
The old red car parked by smaller rocks is how I feel when I am tired, and just need to do some self care, and get extra rest. The broken set of wheels on the other side of the mountain is representative of when I cannot seem to "get my act together", that no matter what I try, I do not accomplish anything. Then last, but not least, is the miniature Airforce Stealth Bomber. This is incredibly fast, accurate, dependable, and can soar high above any formidable object; representing days when I do overcome, solve problems, accomplish my mission, and am ready for the next issue.
Given the right set of play therapy miniatures, I can see how this type of play therapy session might help students/ clients to portray their feelings & emotions. I would especially use this with young boys who tend to relate more to vehicles, planes, motorcycles, boats, etc... Many different types of personal landscapes could be created such as parks, deserts, mountains, beaches, or forests.
