Play Therapy Activity for Fear, Stress, Anxiety, Phobias in Kids: Mystery Counseling Session on Hunted House

There appears to be a theme with that past play therapy activities. My summation of this theme is that play therapy is a process. Once again we are tasked with an assignment that is shrouded in ambiguity. I think as fledgling play therapists we are challenged to embrace the uncertainty that comes with each client and each play therapy counseling session.

The haunted house can be used as a metaphor for the possible pitfalls a play therapist might encounter. These pitfalls can include things various types of clients, views about a play therapy client, to things like counselor confidence, ethics, and lack of training. A therapist can be haunted by the fear that he/she is not properly trained. The therapist can be haunted by fear of the unknown about a client or what should be down in a particular case.

Trusting the process seems to be the key for all our activities as per Dr. Stangline. At first we begin to work on the assignment, often not knowing how it will end. At the conclusion if the assignment we may discover that we have learned a great deal simply by working through the assignment, and trusting the process. This is the magic that comes from the gifted Dr. Stangline's class teachings. She makes us think for ourselves and come up with creative ways we never dreamed we could do.

This play therapy assignment is ideal for children who are having nightmares, fears, phobia's and anxiety. They can house their fears in the haunted house and leave it in the play therapy room.

Like a haunted house, play therapy therapy is fraught with potential “ghouls” and “goblins” or challenges and setbacks. However, like hunted houses not every haunted house is the same. Just like clients that are all different even if they display similar traits that often embody classic mental health issues.

The new play therapist must learn to navigate the potential difficulties by trusting the therapy process learned in courses like Play Therapy with Dr. Stangline. I wish every therapist could experience this play therapy course with Dr. Stangline.
