How I use the Doll House Play Therapy Technique / Doll House Play Therapy Activity
I had heard a lot about making my play therapy dollhouse throughout the semester from various sources. By the time it came for me to build mine, I had learned two things: that it was hard and emotional. So, I dreaded it and put it off as long as possible, afraid that it would bring up some emotionally devastating childhood trauma that I had repressed. While it was difficult, I need not have worried so much.
I began gathering materials for my play therapy dollhouse throughout the semester. A couple of days before it was due, I started to plan my strategy. Once I started creating it my dollhouse took on a life of itself. One of the requirements that I made for myself was that I not spend any money on my house. I gathered all the materials I had and my house ended up looking quite accurate to my childhood home.
My play therapy dollhouse consisted of four rooms. They were the most important rooms to me as a child. These rooms are the kitchen, living room, my parents' bedroom, and my bedroom. The kitchen was and continues to be the life of the house. My mom loves to cook and eat, so she was in there a lot and it continues to be the meeting place of our house. My room was holds a lot of memories because I spent so many hours there playing.
My parent's bedroom was important because it was a comforting place for me as a child. If I was sick or had a bad dream, I slept in their room. The fourth room was the living room. I played a lot in this room, and my dad was spent a lot of time in there as well.
Once I finished my play therapy dollhouse and looked at it, it was quite a cheerful place! My partner asked me if there was anything I would change about it my house in the past or now. I thought about it and I realized that I honestly would not changed anything from my childhood home.
There were things that I did not like at the time, but I can now see how they shaped who I am today so I would not change them. The thing I would change now in my house would be for my parents to be closer. Due to the economic fall-out my parents now have almost not retirement and are working harder than ever while most people their age are retiring. So I would like to see them relaxing and enjoying their retirement.
This play therapy exercise made me appreciate my childhood. I was able to really see how much my childhood shaped who I am today. My childhood was truly one of the happiest times of my life. Building my childhood home and taught me to revere and treasure my childhood. It was a special time for me that I will never get back, but I will look back on it with fond memories.
