Play therapy mandala 23
Like the Sandtray Therapy at home project, the Play Therapy Mandala at home was equally relaxing and was created in a low anxiety environment. At first it was difficult to think about what type of Mandala to create. I first thought about creating one that was similar to the one I created in class last week. This Mandala comprised entirely of circles and was punctuated with color. I began by using one the paper plates we were given in class. I then traced the bottom of an empty water bottle. Next I created smaller circles using the bottle cap.
I then chose various colors and decided to assign certain colors to a particular circle size. The water bottle was the larger circle therefore I decided blue would look better enlarged. I then divided the circles created with the bottle cap. Some were colored red and some were colored yellow. The red circles represented excitement, daring, and power. The yellow circles represented hope, new beginnings, and warmth.
The mandala I created at home was created using Microsoft Publisher. I drew rounded squares to create four separate areas: the Army, My Family, Education, and the Future. The Army is at the top because it has has tremendous influence in my life. It was the first major organization for which I was exposed. The Army provided me with educational financial assistance for both my Bachelors, and my other Master’s degree programs. I am a member of the Army National Guard. We meet for training one weekend a month and two weeks per year. However, I also work as a temporary technician full-time with the Georgia Army National Guard.
The next square is my family. I have a drawing of myself and my daughter. I usually see her on the weekends and a few days during the week if my schedule permits. Currently, I am on vacation and she is staying with me during this time. She is a great kid and I am extremely fortunate to have her in my life.
The rounded-rectangle on the bottom represents my hopes for the future. I have a drawing of a house and an office building. The house represents the house I plan to buy for my family. The office building represents achieving my goal of becoming a college professor and professional counselor.
The final rounded-square has a drawing of me pointing to a chalk board. It serves a dual purpose. In the drawing of me I am wearing a collared shirt and a tie. That represents me as a college professor in a classroom. There is a list of terms written on the chalkboard: Counseling, LPC, and PhD. Counseling represents the program for which I am currently enrolled, clinical mental health counseling. The LPC stands for the credential I hope to obtain once I have completed the program; Licensed Professional Counselor. Finally, the PhD of course stands for Doctor of Philosophy, the degree required to teach at the University level.
I enjoyed working on this play therapy mandala project it allowed me to look at my life and aspirations and place them in a graphical format. This representation provides me with a sense of balance and wholeness I have not felt when I think and write about the same things in a linear text format.
