Inner Child Scrapbook Experience for Play Therapy Class

I really enjoyed completing the inner child scrapbook in my play therapy class. I have always had a creative and artistic side and was happy to reconnect with it. I had a wonderful, fun-filled, happy childhood and was excited to delve back into it. The project brought back a lot of old memories for me. It took me back to a happy place and I realized how much I’ve missed those feelings. As I worked on the scrapbook I had an overwhelming sense of calm and peace.
This project allowed me to reconnect with my inner child by allowing me to reflect on my childhood interests, dreams, and favorite pastimes. I rediscovered parts of myself that I had long forgotten about and realized that I have lost touch with my creative and artistic side. As a result, I now make time each week to complete an artistic project. I also plan to purchase a small keyboard so that I can resume playing the piano, which I did for much of my childhood. I forgot what an avid Barbie collector I was as a child. I have considered building my Barbie collection again focusing on limited edition and collector items.
This activity definitely helped me to become a better play therapist because it can be difficult to connect with younger clients if you are not connected with your inner child. Also, it is important to actually engage in the very activities that the children will be asked to complete to gain a deeper understanding of the therapeutic benefits of play therapy. It is easier to explain and describe activities to children once you have completed them yourself.
