Free Play Therapy Game Activity for Middle Schoolers: Middle School Monopoly

Play therapy games can be a valuable tool for individual, group, or classroom guidance sessions. Different types of play therapy games, which are developmentally age appropriate, may be used to enhance a main point, or a theme, or a topical discussion.

I chose to make a Middle School Monopoly Play Therapy Game based on the original Junior Monopoly Game. As a Professional School Counselor, I have noticed that many middle school age students do not really understand what the high school graduation requirements are, unless they possibly have an older sibling. Rather than always going to the GA college 411 website, I made a playing board with the following changes:

Train Ride - changed to Bus Ride (roll again)
Go To Jail - Go To Rest Rooms (pay $2)
Board Walk - AP Roller Coaster
Green Property - Math Maze
Red Property - Language Arts Loop de Loop
Blue Property - Elective Ferris Wheel
Purple Property - Social Studies Slide
Orange Property - Science Nature Show

My play therapy game rules are very similar to Junior Monopoly game rules. The object of the game is to be the player with the most money when another player runs out of cash. Students do this by obtaining ticket booths on as many subject properties as possible and collecting entrance fees when other players land on them. Choose a banker and give each student a set amount of $30 play money plus a plastic moving piece; then place the Chance Cards, 1 die, and the plastic ticket booths in the middle. As players take turns rolling the die, they move their playing piece according to instructions on the space they land on. The objective of the game is for students to begin to understand graduation and college entrance requirements in a fun way.
