How to Do A Play Therapy Solar System Genogram

Rationale: This play therapy genogram is a bit different and is often called "The World's Most Creative Play Therapy Genogram".

With this genogram the client will use the symbols on the worksheet below that include the moon, sun, stars, and planets to represent family members on this creative play therapy genogram.

Other symbols of the solar system and space can be added if the client chooses.

By using this type of play therapy genogram the therapist can see the hidden family dynamics that don’t always show up in the traditional genogram.

1. Ask the client to cut out the symbols on each side of the worksheet below. Tell the client that they will create a solar system using their family members.

Have the client identify each family member of the family of origin and give a symbol to that family member. Write the name of the family member down on the symbol.

2. The client can add them to the play therapy solar system genogram worksheet to create a non-traditional genogram.

It does not matter where the client places the objects in the solar system genogram. Allow the client to decide where to place the symbols.

3. After the client has completed the play therapy genogram ask them to translate the symbols. What family member is represented by the sun? The moon? The stars? The planets?

4. Usually the sun symbol in this play therapy genogram shows the favorite parent. The moon can represent the least favorite parent. The stars are the siblings that shine.

The planets can represent the children that are the “rock” or perhaps “grounded” members of the family.

5. Also pay close attention to the location of each symbol. Are the symbols placed at the top? The bottom?

This can show the hidden family hierarchy and possible “pecking order” of a family system.
