Note: Do not expect to have every miniature on hand for your sand tray therapy and play therapy miniature world clients.

It is impossible to collect every play therapy or sand tray therapy client’s miniature to fit their personal needs.

Of course, one should try to have as many miniatures as you can without looking like someone who is hoarding miniatures.

However, this is where the beauty of clip art comes in.

The play therapy clip art miniature is something that can be found on-line at Microsoft Free Clip Art, in magazines, and with a client’s personal drawing.

I keep a color printer on hand and often get the client to pick out free play therapy clip art on the Microsoft website. I print out the play therapy clip art and the client cuts it out.

You can laminate play therapy clip art for future use if you wish. Kinkos will do your laminating if you don’t have access to a laminating machine.

I also collect play therapy clip art from magazines. Many catalogs have a great variety of pictures to choose from. I cut pictures out if I feel they will be helpful to a client.

I then leave the play therapy, or sand tray therapy, clip art in one of my sand tray boxes. If the client wishes to use it then it is there in the box to be utilized.

I also use these play therapy / sand tray therapy items for the miniature worlds clients can create such as:

Private Island

Personal Theater

Knights and Dragons

I also encourage my play therapy / sand tray therapy clients to look through magazines and cut out clip art that speaks to them. They can bring it into a session and put it in the sand tray.

By asking the play therapy / sand tray therapy client to look for their own clip art or magazine cut outs we put some responsibility onto the client for finding their own answers.

It will also allow the play therapy / sand tray therapy client to take responsibility in the therapeutic process and teaches them new ways to look at the play therapy / sand tray therapy world.

The play therapy / sand tray therapy client can also do a free hand drawing of a miniature if they cannot find a miniature, or clip art, miniature that fits their personal needs.

Other ideas include scrapbook cut outs found at craft stores. These are inexpensive and can also be given to the client.

By using play therapy / sand tray therapy clip art and magazine cut outs the client can take home a reminder of our session and have an invaluable visual to look at in the future.

I encourage my play therapy / sand tray therapy graduate students to start a miniature clip art and magazine cut outs for their sand tray miniature collection and future clients.
