I completed this sand tray for a sand tray therapy training class on the evening of my birthday. Without realizing it before hand I noticed that the sand tray therapy miniatures that I chose actually represented some of the most important people in my life. For my birthday, I had dinner with these people.

To represent myself, a school counselor, I chose the horse. The horse is playful and carefree, as I felt on my special day of the year. Even though I was one year older I felt young at heart and so thankful to have these people around me. Next, I chose the elephant to represent my boyfriend. He is a big guy as is the elephant.

I think of him as being my rock, someone who will never let me down. He is also my protector not only from the world but from those close to me as well. I am so thankful I have him to always be at my side. He truly made my birthday one to remember.

The next person closest to me is the turtle. I think of this being my grandmother. She is my light. Since my mother has passed, I feel so much love for my grandmother. I think of her as being wise and cautious. She is also unchanging. Over the years her behavior, humor and love has remained a constant in my life.

On the other side of the circle if miniatures, I first chose the Stegosaurus. This represents my aunt. She is motherly and protective. These animals are herbivores and I think of this as being particular and aware of what decisions a person makes.

She is very much this way. Next is the Triceratops, which is a miniature for my uncle. He has horns that can come out. While I love him dearly he is very much concerned about himself. The last miniature I chose was the large cat. I think of this as my little nephew. He is blast to hang out with and very much wants to be the center of attention. He loves to play and cuddle.

Again I feel so very lucky to have these people in my life. I can use a modified version of the sand tray therapy as a school counselor to help my high school kids.
