A New Play Therapy Technique: The Chocolate Factory
The idea of a play therapy technique: mystery counseling session was especially nerve wrecking in the beginning due to the unknown nature of the assignment. When I pulled the slip of paper with "Chocolate Factory" I was both relieved and taken aback at the same time. The relieve was due to the fact that chocolate is my all time favorite, so I immediately felt a connection. The sense of uncertainty was mainly due to the immediate mental image I had of Willy Wonka and the Ommpa Loompas! My first thought was to recreate the infamous chocolate river scene.
Upon further reflection, I realized that since this was a mystery play therapy session, I technically called for a very small prep time to create this world, which eliminated the need for an elaborate and well planned imagery. Instead, I chose to use what I had in front of me, which really boiled down to a used shoe box, magazines, newspapers, scissors, and straws.
As I was creating the mini world, I zoned out as far as my surroundings were concerned and just allowed my ideal chocolate factory to take over. By the time I was finished, I had a mixture of actual chocolate candy images, combined with revised idea of Oompa Loompas!!
This play therapy activity was a great stress reliever for me. It took me out of my own head, cluttered with assignments and financial stress, and allowed me to just relax.
